Generally, Thai people perceive “heritage” values mostly from its time. In other words, the older, the better. Modern heritages, considered not to be ancient enough, are now more than ever in a difficult position to survive because of the rigid national committee’s judgment. Today, mostly archeologists with few architects involved in the committee, has significantly influenced the field of architectural preservation and adaptation, which in many cases, freezes architecture as an “object” without life.
Building up from the previous 2024, Y4 AD-V studio research foundation, this Y4 AD-IV studio “Reviving, the Lopburi Lost Modern-scape” works with students to explore the definition, identity and value of “Modern heritage” in Lopburi context. The studio works through the process of research, fieldworks, design critically and holistically. Students learn the past legacy of rich Lopburi history as well as propose an alternative design approach to revive selected Modern heritage sites. The studio is not limited to the problem solving approach, but students will be encouraged to find an opportunity, alternative design approach or unconventional thought, to empower and inspire the practice of the architecture field.
